DAYTON — Kurt Hess was all but sacked.
But in his best Eli Manning-in-the-Super Bowl move, the Chaminade-Julienne senior quarterback escaped a tackle and rolled left on third-and-10.
"I saw pressure," the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder said. "(Somebody) ripped my jersey. One of my lineman told me he threw a guy off me. We'll see how that goes on film.
"I was just keeping my eyes down field. I looked down at the receiver and he was still running his route. He did a good job getting open. I just let it go."
That drive-saving pass to Alex Kauth was followed by one of Hess' career-high five touchdown passes. C-J earned a 40-22 win against Thurgood Marshall on Thursday night, Aug. 28, at Welcome Stadium.
Unofficially, Hess was 16 of 24 for 376 yards with TD passes of 14, 45, 42, 54 and 14 yards. "I've had four (TDs) a few times," Hess said. "I was happy to get the fifth one."
C-J (1-1) had to throw because it had no running game. Marshall (0-2) had an 8-0 lead and unofficially racked up 418 yards rushing with its physical double-wing, bunch offense. D'Ante Oglesby led Marshall with 210 yards, including a 69-yard scoring dash.
But three fumbles and numerous penalties hurt the Cougars' drives. Marshall coach Earl White said: "We don't have plays for third-and-20."
The Eagles did, with eight plays of more than 20 yards.
Trailing 13-8, Hess' escape play set up a 42-yard TD pass to junior Laron Brown. C-J capped the opening drive of third quarter with a 54-yard scoring pass to Mike Raiff. Leading 26-8, C-J recovered its onside kick and Ahmad Mack later dived in for a 33-8 lead.
Four C-J receivers had more than 70 yards, led by Derrick Goddard's 112 yards and two scores. "Receivers ran great routes tonight; the line protected," Hess said. "Things just went right."
C-J coach Andy Helms said Hess' college 'looks' might turn into a scholarship.
"Right now, (he's got) no early offers," Helms said. "But I would think people would take a peek at this film and say, 'Hey, he can play a little bit.'"
